Read the full changelogMint Ultimate is a completely free, open source and powerful distribution of Linux derived from the popular Linux Mint operating system, which in turn is derived from the world’s most popular distribution of Linux, Ubuntu, which in turn is based on the award-winning Debian GNU/Linux OS.
Mint Ultimate is more than a Linux Mint derivative, as it brings three of the most popular Live CD distributions oriented towards system recovery and restore operations, the GParted Live CD, Darik’s Boot and Nuke, and Parted Magic.
The distribution can be downloaded free of charge from Softpedia. It is distributed as a bootable Live DVD ISO image that has approximately 2.5 GB in size and contains software packages optimized only for 64-bit (x86_64/amd64) hardware platforms.
As expected, the ISO image can be deployed to either an USB flash drive of at least 4GB in size or a blank, single-layer DVD disc or DVD-RW disc. These will be transformed into bootable mediums with the help of any CD/DVD burning software or UNetbootin/Disks applications.
The Live DVD’s boot menu is quite astonishing, like nothing we’ve ever seen before. It includes options for starting the live system of Mint Ultimate with normal configuration, start one of the aforementioned Live CDs, perform a memory test, boot from the local disk drive, drop to a shell prompt or reboot the machine. Accessing one of the included operating systems, will display the boot menu of the respective distro.
The distro’s graphical session boasts a traditional layout, as it is built around the MATE desktop environment, which in turn is derived from the classic version of the GNOME graphical desktop environment. The layout comprises of two panels, one at the top of the screen and another one at the bottom of the screen. Each panel includes various applets that will help the user to be more productive when using Mint Ultimate.
Among the preinstalled applications, we can mention Disks disk manager, Tomboy note-taking app, GIMP image editor, gThumb image viewer, LibreOffice office suite, Pinta drawing software, Simple Scan image scanner, FileZilla file transfer client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, HexChat IRC client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Transmission torrent downloader, Banshee music player, VLC Media Player, BleachBit system cleaner, Oracle VirtualBox virtualization software and ISO Master ISO file manipulator.
